So, as of yesterday we are officially one month post-accident. In the past month we have experienced all extremes of human emotion…despair, heartbreak, fear, shock and devastation…and on the other end – joy, pride, awe, excitement and hope. We have witnessed the power of prayer, and the strength of community. Thank you to our loyal friends and family for sticking with us, and staying committed to seeing each of these kids healed. As I said at the vigil a few weeks ago, we need you. We need you now and we need you six months from now. You are providing a wide safety net of support for this beautiful family, and we cannot begin to express how grateful we are for each of you.
Here is where each of the kids is at, one month post-accident…
Jessie remains in the trauma rehabilitation center at Harborview. She is still paralyzed from the shoulders down, but there are promising signs that she will regain some unknown degree of sensation and muscle control. Only time will tell exactly how much. She is determined and strong, and adamant that she WILL walk again one day.
Jaime and Steven are currently in the same room at a skilled nursing facility in Seattle. They will spend several weeks there, allowing their bones and bodies to heal so that they can return to Harborview to undergo intensive rehab. They are being transported to and from Harborview each week for appointments with various specialists to check and recheck their progress and the status of their injuries.
Jeremy has returned to college and will come home regularly to visit his sisters and brother in law. He has a great support system at school, including several lifelong friends who have known him and his family for many years. EWU has also been incredibly supportive of Jer, and they are providing many resources to ensure that he is well cared for while he is there.
Each of these four has a team of caregivers who are making sure that their needs are met as best as possible. Jessie has someone with her around the clock, and Jaime and Steven have people with them throughout the day. We are all so appreciative of the support you have given us – the gift cards, parking money, messages, cards, and prayers have sustained us throughout the past month.
As we look to the future, we have a lot of hope. The road ahead of us is long and will undoubtedly have many twists and turns, but we believe that we are watching a miracle unfold in front of us and we look forward to continuing to share it all with you.
